Annecy Festival - 100 Years in 100 Seconds

Having just completed its 100th anniversary, Brazil’s animation industry is being honoured by the 2018 Annecy International Animation Film Festival. For this reason, the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil) is helping to publicize the country. Agency F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi created a special activation during the event, with outdoor and digital media messages, a film advert and 10 mini documentaries that presented the industry’s trajectory to the public. This spot summarizes 100 years of Brazilian animation in 100 seconds. “since the movie had to appeal both to animation experts and to the general public, we decided to include characters from the worlds of advertising and entertainment”. The final result therefore features, for example, the little mouse from the children’s TV show “Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum” as well as Cuca from “The Boy and the World”, nominated for the 2016 Oscars. The directors also assert that “this project was only possible thanks to the work of several talented illustrators, who recreated some animations that were lost in time”. That’s the case with Itsuo Nakashima, invited to animate Piconzé, a character created by his father, Ypê Nakashima, author of one of the first Brazilian color animated feature films. Walbercy Ribas, regarded by some as the “father of Brazilian animation”, recreated using gouache paint and frame-by-frame animation the bird that appears in “Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury”, the first Brazilian animated feature film to win the Cristal award at Annecy, and also pre-nominated for the 2014 Oscars. To watch the documentaries visit the campaign’s website.
